[Review] Nang Palang’s Buko Pie: A Slice Above the Rest

Hands down, Nang Palang’s buko pie is the best I’ve ever tasted. Bold statement? Maybe. But trust me, it absolutely deserves the praise.

Growing up, I’ve grown accustomed to Colette’s and D’Original Buko Pies from Laguna, often grabbing a whole pie whenever I traveled back to Quezon City from Batangas. I typically stick to the brands I know, having been disappointed before by pies from lesser-known shops or ambulatory vendors claiming their wares were fresh from the oven - only to feel scammed afterwards.

For years, my mom raved about this particular buko pie from Iloilo, but I never quite understood her enthusiasm. I mean, it’s just buko pie, right? One day, while heading to the mall, I asked if she wanted anything. After thinking it over briefly, she requested Nang Palang’s buko pie. I finally had to see what the fuss was about.

And wow, was I in for a surprise. The moment I took a bite, I knew this was unlike any buko pie I had ever tasted. The coconut meat comes from tender, young coconuts with the perfect texture, and the generous proportion of coconut to custard creates an ideal balance. Not overly sweet, just rich and satisfying - none of those unnecessary toppings like cheese (yes, Colette’s, I’m looking at you).

For years, Tagaytay’s Rowena’s Buko Tarts held the throne as my favorite coconut-based dessert. But Nang Palang’s? It dethroned the reigning champion with ease.

You can find Nang Palang’s buko pie at various mall kiosks in Iloilo City, though I don’t believe they have their own dedicated retail stores. Instead, they rely on reseller partners. They do, however, have a branch in Oton, where the magic happens. There, they bake these delectable treats, offer curbside pickup, and even have a small outside dine-in area.

Their selection doesn’t stop at buko pie either - both their egg pie and cassava cake are fantastic, and while I haven’t tried their pineapple pie yet, I’ve heard great things about it.

If you ever come across Nang Palang’s buko pie, don’t hesitate. Get one. Savor it. And experience what true buko pie bliss tastes like.
